Since the start of the 2022/23 season, Mamelodi Sundowns have had more ball possession percentage total than Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester United per domestic league match.
CIES Football Observatory, a well-known research organisation based in Zurich, Switzerland, has released new data on teams from all global domestic leagues.
Sundowns has 200.4 passes made in opponents’ final third of the pitch, compared to second place Cape Town City’s 156.9 passes made.
Sundowns also has a higher passing accuracy of 86.7%, while TS Galaxy is surprisingly second, ahead of Orlando Pirates and Amakhosi.
With an average of 65.2% ball possession, the Brazilians are the best-placed team in South Africa and are ranked eighth globally, ahead of Liverpool (63.2%) and Manchester United (48%).
Shakhtar Donetsk leads the chart with 67.4% despite having only played six matches, while Manchester City is second with 67.2%, while Benfica, Qarabag, Ajax Amsterdam, Celtic, Kaspiy FK, Rangers, and Slavia Praha round out the top ten.
