The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took a big step Friday evening when it issued a statement inviting new applications to fill all five positions on its selection panel, which had been discussed since the day after the loss.
It comes just a month after World Cup winner Roger Binny was appointed to replace Sourav Ganguly, who was reportedly forced out in a political squabble.
According to reports following England’s defeat, the T20 squad will undergo a major transition, with prominent senior players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin being gradually eased out.
Rohit, 35, is India’s current leader in all three formats of the game.
According to the Indian Express, the new selection panel will be in charge of appointing separate captains for various formats.
According to a Saturday report, “split captaincy was the likely direction in which Indian cricket will go after its major ICC trophy drought continued.”
Hardik Pandya, who is currently leading the Indian T20 squad for a three-match series against New Zealand, is widely regarded as the favourite to take over in the shortest format.
This year, the all-rounder led Gujarat Titans to their first Indian Premier League title.
The first match between India and the Black Caps was called off due to rain on Friday, and the teams will meet again on Sunday at Mount Maunganui.
