Avengers Endgame reclaims the worldwide box-office record from Avatar after its 2026 Encore theatrical re-release.

Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed the title of the world’s highest-grossing film, returning to a position it first held in 2019 before Avatar moved back ahead following subsequent theatrical re-releases.

The Marvel blockbuster has now earned approximately $2.925 billion worldwide, edging past Avatar, which stands at roughly $2.923 billion. The difference between the two films is less than $2 million, a remarkably small margin considering both have generated close to $3 billion in theatrical revenue.

The latest change in the rankings follows the release of Endgame: Encore, which has added more than $126 million worldwide to the film’s lifetime total. Its performance is notable not simply because it altered the all-time box-office chart, but because it demonstrates that audiences are still willing to return to a seven-year-old film that has long been available through streaming and home entertainment.

Disney and Marvel have also timed the re-release carefully. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in December, making the return of Endgame a useful way to reconnect audiences with the period when the Marvel Cinematic Universe reached its greatest commercial scale.

The Encore Release Has Given Endgame A Remarkable Second Run

The 2026 theatrical return opened with an estimated $86 million worldwide, including around $26 million from North America and roughly $60 million internationally. Its global total has since climbed beyond $126 million.

For a film released more than seven years ago, those figures are substantial. Many new theatrical releases struggle to reach similar numbers despite carrying full production and marketing budgets.

Endgame has an advantage that very few catalogue titles possess. Its original release was built around more than a decade of interconnected storytelling, beginning with Iron Man in 2008 and expanding across dozens of characters and several overlapping storylines.

By the time audiences reached Endgame in 2019, the film was being sold as the culmination of the Infinity Saga rather than simply another Marvel sequel. That positioning helped transform its opening into a global theatrical event.

The 2026 re-release is drawing on that history. For audiences who followed Marvel through its first major era, seeing the film again in cinemas offers a different experience from watching it at home. Premium screens, large audiences and the scale of the production remain part of what made the film commercially distinctive in the first place.

Its return also arrives at a moment when Marvel is attempting to rebuild a similar sense of anticipation around its next Avengers chapter.

Avengers Endgame And Avatar Have Traded The Record Before

The contest between Endgame and Avatar has been unusually fluid because both films have continued earning money well beyond their original theatrical runs.

James Cameron’s Avatar became the highest-grossing film in history following its 2009 release and eventually accumulated about $2.79 billion during its initial era of distribution. It remained at the top of the worldwide chart for roughly a decade.

Endgame challenged that position immediately after its April 2019 release.

The film earned approximately $1.2 billion worldwide during its opening weekend, becoming the first movie to pass $1 billion during its debut. It crossed $2 billion only 11 days later and eventually surpassed Avatar in July of that year.

The rankings changed again in 2021 when Avatar returned to Chinese cinemas and earned enough additional revenue to reclaim the top spot. Further re-releases strengthened its position before Endgame: Encore shifted the balance once more in 2026.

The comparison should nevertheless be understood within the conventions of modern box-office reporting.

Worldwide rankings are based on nominal theatrical revenue and do not adjust for inflation, historical ticket prices or changes in the size of the global cinema market. A film released decades ago could therefore have sold substantially more tickets while generating a lower nominal total.

For that reason, Endgame can accurately be described as the highest-grossing film worldwide under the industry’s standard measurement, but the figure should not be interpreted as proof that it has attracted the largest cinema audience in history.

Disney Benefits Regardless Of Which Film Holds The Record

There is an unusual corporate dimension to the rivalry because Avatar and Endgame now belong to the same entertainment group.

Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009 and later took control of the Avatar franchise through its acquisition of major 21st Century Fox assets.

The company therefore benefits from either title occupying the top position.

More broadly, Disney controls a significant share of the highest-grossing films ever released, including Avatar: The Way of Water, several Marvel titles and major 20th Century properties.

Marvel remains particularly valuable within that portfolio. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has generated more than $35 billion in worldwide theatrical revenue, making it the most commercially successful film franchise in global box-office history.

The renewed performance of Endgame provides Disney with another reminder of how much value remains in the strongest parts of that catalogue, particularly when older films can be connected to upcoming theatrical releases.

The Re-Release Is Closely Tied To Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel’s decision to bring Endgame back to cinemas is closely connected to the release of Avengers: Doomsday.

Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed Infinity War and Endgame, have returned for the new film. Doomsday will also bring together characters from several areas of the current Marvel universe, including the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Wakandans and Thunderbolts.

Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the franchise in a new role as Doctor Doom rather than Tony Stark, a casting decision that gives Marvel a direct connection to its earlier Avengers era while taking the character dynamics in a different direction.

Since 2019, Marvel has expanded rapidly across cinema and streaming, introducing numerous characters and storylines. That expansion has produced mixed commercial and critical results, and the franchise has sometimes struggled to create the same sense of narrative focus that characterised the years leading to Endgame.

Re-releasing one of Marvel’s most successful films gives the studio an opportunity to remind audiences of that earlier continuity before asking them to invest in another large ensemble story.

It also introduces the theatrical experience of Endgame to younger viewers who may have first encountered the film through streaming rather than in cinemas.

Re-Releases Are Becoming More Valuable To Hollywood

The commercial success of Endgame: Encore also reflects a wider interest in using established films as active theatrical properties rather than treating them purely as catalogue content.

Re-releases carry obvious financial advantages. The production costs have already been absorbed, audience awareness is high, and marketing can rely on nostalgia, anniversaries, fan communities or connections to upcoming sequels.

Premium formats such as IMAX can also provide a reason for audiences to buy tickets for films they can already watch at home.

The performance of Endgame does not mean every successful film can generate another $100 million years later. Its position within a globally recognised franchise and the scale of its original release make it an unusual case.

Even so, studios are likely to take notice of how effectively Disney has converted an older title into both a meaningful revenue source and a promotional platform for a forthcoming blockbuster.

The strategy is particularly attractive at a time when theatrical studios are trying to reduce financial risk while maintaining a regular flow of major releases.

Endgame Still Occupies An Unusual Place In Modern Franchise Cinema

The scale of Endgame’s original success depended on circumstances that are difficult to reproduce.

Marvel spent more than a decade training audiences to view individual films as parts of a larger narrative. When that narrative reached its conclusion in 2019, the film benefited from years of accumulated interest across multiple franchises and characters.

Seven years later, audiences know every major plot development, including the deaths and departures that once made the film unusually difficult to discuss without spoilers.

Yet the 2026 box-office performance suggests that familiarity has not significantly weakened its appeal as a theatrical event. That may be the more revealing part of the story.

The difference between Endgame and Avatar remains narrow enough that another theatrical release could change the rankings again. The record itself may therefore prove temporary.

What is less temporary is the evidence that Marvel can still generate significant theatrical business from a film closely associated with its most successful period.

As the studio prepares Avengers: Doomsday, the return of Endgame has given Marvel more than another box-office record. It has restored one of its most recognisable films to the centre of the theatrical conversation at a moment when the company is preparing to ask audiences to invest in the Avengers on that scale again.
