Elrigh Louw had to leave the field with an ankle injury during the final 10 minutes of the Springboks’ 44-22 URC victory over Benetton in Treviso on Friday night, potentially dealing a massive blow to the Springboks and, to a lesser extent, the Bulls.
The ferocious 23-year-old flanker, who has been a fulcrum of the Bulls’ pack and made some promising cameos in the national team this year, went for a scan afterward, but franchise director of rugby Jake White suggested that his chances of making the year-end tour to Europe are slim.
As a result, White is hoping that this indicates some good news for the Bulls’ cause.
“I hope it’s not too serious. If we can give him some time before putting him back on the field, it should be fine “He stated.
“I doubt Elrigh will be available to run on Monday, but we have one game left and then four weeks off, so if he misses [the Sharks game next Sunday], he might just be available again by the end of November.”
Meanwhile, franchises with players called up to the Springbok training camp in Stellenbosch, which begins on Sunday, will have to wait until Wednesday to confirm their participation in the final round of matches before the international break.
“Yeah, so they all get together, and by Wednesday, whoever isn’t selected for the 25-man squad for the Ireland Test, which is the first game of the tour, gets sent back,” White explained.
“I suppose we should first find out who the selectors chose for that match, and whoever isn’t there can be chosen.”
