Taylor Swift performing onstage ahead of her Academy Museum Gala 2026 appearance in Los Angeles on October 17.

Taylor Swift’s Academy Museum Gala performance will close the sixth annual fundraising event in Los Angeles on October 17, bringing the singer to one of Hollywood’s prominent industry gatherings. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures announced her participation on Thursday, October 8, as preparations continue for an evening honouring Charlize Theron, Colman Domingo and filmmaker John Carpenter.

The announcement has also renewed attention on Swift’s involvement in cinema. Earlier this year, she released I Knew It, I Knew You, an original song for Pixar’s Toy Story 5. The recording has prompted speculation about a potential Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.

The Academy Museum has not revealed Swift’s setlist, and neither the singer nor her representatives have confirmed plans for an Oscar campaign.

Amy Homma, director and president of the Academy Museum, welcomed Swift’s participation, praising her international influence and confirming that she would close the evening.

The performance follows several recent projects that have brought Swift into closer collaboration with actors, filmmakers and cinematographers.

Taylor Swift Joins Hollywood’s Biggest Names at Academy Museum Gala

The Academy Museum Gala raises money for the museum’s exhibitions, educational initiatives, public screenings and film preservation programmes.

Now in its sixth year, the event attracts prominent figures from the entertainment industry and recognises artists whose work has influenced cinema.

This year’s ceremony will honour three established Hollywood figures. Charlize Theron will receive the Icon Award, recognising her international impact as a performer. The Oscar-winning actress has built a varied career across major studio productions and independent films, including Monster, Mad Max: Fury Road and Atomic Blonde.

Filmmaker and composer John Carpenter will receive the Luminary Award for his contributions to cinema. Carpenter helped redefine modern horror through films including Halloween and The Thing, while his electronic scores established a distinctive musical identity that continues to influence filmmakers.

Colman Domingo will receive the Vantage Award, which recognises artists who challenge established perspectives in filmmaking. The two-time Academy Award nominee has earned critical recognition for performances in Rustin and Sing Sing.

Directors Steven Spielberg and Robert Rodriguez, along with producer Kate Capshaw, will co-chair the gala. Its host committee includes Jessica Alba, Adrien Brody, Kate Hudson, Demi Moore, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, and several other prominent artists.

The Academy Museum raised more than $12 million through last year’s gala, demonstrating the event’s financial importance to the institution.

Could Taylor Swift’s Toy Story 5 Song Earn an Oscar Nomination?

Swift’s contribution to Toy Story 5 has become central to the discussion surrounding her Academy Museum appearance.

Her original song, I Knew It, I Knew You, marked a return to country music, the genre in which she began her career. The recording reached No. 1 on American country radio, giving Swift her first chart-topper in that format in 13 years.

Its commercial performance has strengthened interest in the song ahead of the next awards season.

The Academy Award for Best Original Song recognises music written specifically for a motion picture. Academy voters assess eligible submissions through a formal nomination process, making commercial popularity only one part of a much broader discussion.

Although entertainment commentators have identified Swift’s recording as a possible contender, the Academy has not announced nominations for the upcoming ceremony.

Her gala appearance also does not establish that she intends to campaign for the award.

Swift has previously contributed original music to several films. She recorded Safe & Sound with The Civil Wars for The Hunger Games in 2012. The song won a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

A decade later, she wrote and performed Carolina for the film adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing. The recording earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song.

These projects demonstrated her ability to write for narratives beyond her own albums, incorporating a film’s characters, atmosphere and emotional themes into her songwriting.

The Toy Story 5 recording continues that work while placing her music within one of animation’s most recognisable franchises.

Swift Expands Her Work as a Director

Swift’s growing involvement in filmmaking extends beyond original soundtracks.

In 2021, she wrote and directed All Too Well: The Short Film, starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien. The project adapted the extended version of her song into a narrative about a deteriorating relationship and its emotional consequences.

The film earned recognition for its direction and visual storytelling, including the Grammy Award for Best Music Video.

In December 2022, Searchlight Pictures announced that Swift would make her feature-film directorial debut from an original screenplay she had written.

The studio did not disclose the project’s plot or production schedule, and the film has yet to receive a confirmed release date.

Swift has continued directing music videos in the meantime. Her recent video for Patient Zero, from the expanded edition of The Life of a Showgirl, features Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.

Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki also worked on the production. Lubezki previously won Academy Awards for his cinematography on Gravity, Birdman and The Revenant.

The collaboration brought Swift together with established film-industry professionals and followed her increasing interest in narrative-driven music videos.

At the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, Swift received the inaugural Artist Director Honors award. She also won Video of the Year for The Fate of Ophelia.

Her directing projects now form a substantial part of her creative output, alongside songwriting, recording and live performance.

Why the Academy Museum Gala Matters Beyond Awards Season

The Academy Museum Gala differs from the Academy Awards in both purpose and structure.

The Oscars recognise achievements in films released during a specific eligibility period. The gala, by contrast, raises funding for the Academy Museum while celebrating the careers of selected artists.

Its relationship with the film industry nevertheless makes it an important gathering during the months leading into awards season.

The ceremony connects established directors, studio executives, actors and other creative professionals through an event that supports the preservation and presentation of cinema.

Swift’s participation brings a major recording artist into that setting, reflecting the increasingly close relationship between popular music and filmmaking.

Film soundtracks, concert documentaries and elaborate music videos have become important parts of how audiences experience contemporary entertainment.

Swift has contributed to that development through her own work, particularly Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which brought her concert production to cinemas worldwide.

The film demonstrated the commercial possibilities of theatrical releases built around live music, while her directing projects have allowed her to develop visual stories outside the concert format.

Her October 17 appearance follows that progression, although its immediate purpose remains a musical performance supporting the Academy Museum’s fundraising efforts.

What Will Taylor Swift Perform at the Gala?

The Academy Museum has not announced which songs Swift will perform. Her recent release of I Knew It, I Knew You has encouraged speculation that the Toy Story 5 recording could feature in the programme. However, organisers have confirmed only that she will close the event.

The appearance will follow her recent participation in the MTV Video Music Awards and the release of new material from The Life of a Showgirl.

For the Academy Museum, Swift’s presence adds a globally recognised performer to an evening honouring three significant contributors to cinema.

For Swift, it offers another opportunity to present her music before an audience closely associated with the film industry.

The possibility of an Oscar nomination remains unresolved, and the gala itself will not determine that outcome.

What audiences can expect on October 17 is a performance from an artist whose work increasingly connects songwriting, directing and cinematic presentation, as Hollywood gathers to recognise the achievements of Theron, Domingo and Carpenter.
