ROMEO

Zhou Guanyu’s Formula One career will be extended until 2023, after Alfa Romeo confirmed the driver’s contract extension. Guanyu has been impressive since making his debut at the season-opening race in Bahrain, where he finished 10th and earned a point.

Valtteri Bottas, a teammate and ex-Mercedes driver, has already signed a multi-year contract with the team, but Guanyu’s announcement took longer to confirm.

“I am excited to continue working with Zhou,” Alfa Romeo CEO Frederic Vasseur said ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.

“He has impressed me with his approach to work from day one with the team, at the Abu Dhabi test last year, and this is always a very positive trait.” We knew he was quick, but how quickly he adapted to F1 was one of the best surprises of our season.

“He’s a really nice guy; everyone on the team likes his personality and attitude.” He has the humility to ask questions and learn from the engineers as well as Valtteri, as well as the intelligence to apply everything he has learned to improve race after race.

“He will be able to draw on this experience next season, and I am confident he will take another step forward as we continue to build our team.”

“I am happy and grateful to Alfa Romeo F1 Team for the opportunity to be a part of the team for another season,” Guanyu said of his new contract. There is still much more I want to accomplish in this sport and with the team, and the hard work we have put in since the beginning of the year is only the first step toward where we want to be next season.

“There is still much to learn and develop, but I am confident in our work and eagerly await the next chapter of our story together.”

Zhou’s six points pale in comparison to Bottas’ 46, but he has had more technical issues than his Finnish teammate.
