A student at Stellenbosch University who allegedly urinated on his roommate’s chair in Helshoogte Men’s Residence has been suspended pending the results of an investigation.

The university stated in a statement that Helshoogte management representatives were informed of the allegation on Thursday and immediately reported it to the appropriate university structures for investigation.

The university’s deputy vice-chancellor of learning and teaching, Professor Deresh Ramjugernath, stated: “At Stellenbosch University (SU), human dignity is non-negotiable and must be respected and upheld. When this dignity is compromised, it must be restored in accordance with the disciplinary framework of the university.”

The university expressed its conviction that the law and regulations must always be applied fairly to safeguard the interests and rights of affected and implicated students.

The Office of Student Discipline at the university will investigate the allegations in accordance with the most recent version of the student disciplinary code.

Ramjugernath stated, “When appropriate, SU will communicate further on the outcomes of the ongoing investigations and processes as a matter of urgency.”

Earlier this year, a Huis Marais residence student, Theuns du Toit, was captured on video urinating on the property of a black student. After a hearing for disciplinary action, he was expelled.
