POLICE RAID

Police searched the headquarters of the 2023 Rugby World Cup organisers in France on Wednesday as part of a legal investigation into the competition’s management under former chief executive Claude Atcher.

Atcher was fired last month after an internal inquiry found “alarming managerial practises,” including complaints of bullying and harassment from employees.

Investigators are investigating into the misuse of personal costs, “some contracts in the past, as well as potential anomalies relating to the ticketing system for the 2023 World Cup,” according to France’s L’Equipe daily.

Julien Collette, Atcher’s deputy, was named CEO in his place.

The Rugby World Cup begins on September 8, 2016, with France hosting New Zealand at the Stade de France.

The final is set on October 28.

The World Cup organising committee’s dysfunctions are an unexpected embarrassment for France as it prepares to host the Olympics in 2024.
