Spider-Man: Brand New Day has overtaken Avengers: Endgame

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially overtaken Avengers: Endgame at the North American box office, pushing Tom Holland’s latest Marvel blockbuster into territory reached by almost no movie in Hollywood history.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has just taken down one of Marvel’s biggest box office records.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has surpassed Avengers: Endgame to become the second-highest-grossing movie of all time at the North American box office, continuing a remarkable theatrical run that has already turned the superhero sequel into the biggest movie of 2026.

As of August 25, Brand New Day had earned more than $858.4 million in North America, narrowly moving ahead of the approximately $858.3 million earned by Avengers: Endgame during its theatrical run.

There is now only one movie ahead of Spider-Man on the all-time domestic chart: Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens, which has earned about $936.7 million in North America.

And Brand New Day may not be finished rewriting the record books.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day beats Avengers: Endgame at the box office

Passing Avengers: Endgame is particularly significant because the 2019 Marvel event movie has spent years near the top of virtually every major box office ranking.

Endgame became a cultural phenomenon when it arrived in cinemas, bringing more than a decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe storytelling to a climax and ultimately earning roughly $2.8 billion worldwide.

But at the North American box office, Spider-Man has now edged ahead.

Screen Daily reported that Spider-Man: Brand New Day passed Endgame after reaching approximately $858.4 million, making it the No. 2 release in North American box office history before adjusting for inflation.

The milestone is even more striking considering how quickly the movie reached it.

Released at the end of July, Brand New Day opened with approximately $360 million domestically, setting a new record for the biggest North American opening weekend and narrowly surpassing Avengers: Endgame. Sony reported a global opening of more than $930 million.

Four weeks later, audiences are still showing up.

Can Spider-Man catch Star Wars: The Force Awakens?

The next target is considerably harder.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens remains the highest-grossing film ever at the North American box office, with roughly $936.7 million.

That leaves Spider-Man: Brand New Day around $78 million away from the record based on its latest reported total.

The film is expected to pass $900 million domestically if its current momentum continues, although catching The Force Awakens would require another unusually strong stretch late in its theatrical run. Screen Daily reported that the Spider-Man sequel is on course to reach the $900 million mark.

Whether it ultimately reaches No. 1 or not, becoming only the second film ever to cross Endgame domestically is already a historic achievement.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is also dominating worldwide

The North American record is only part of the story.

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day box office total has climbed above $2.2 billion worldwide, placing the film among a tiny group of releases to ever cross the $2 billion threshold.

It reached $2 billion after only around three weekends in cinemas, becoming one of the fastest movies ever to achieve the milestone. Variety reported that Brand New Day joined an elite club that includes Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Infinity War.

Its next major worldwide target is James Cameron’s Titanic.

After its fourth weekend, Brand New Day had reached roughly $2.22 billion globally, putting it about $44 million behind Titanic’s lifetime total of approximately $2.264 billion at the time of reporting.

If Spider-Man maintains its current pace, another change to the all-time global rankings could arrive soon.

Why Brand New Day became such a huge hit

The performance is especially notable because Hollywood has spent several years debating whether audiences were growing tired of superhero films. Brand New Day appears to have delivered a very different answer.

The movie is Tom Holland’s first solo Spider-Man film since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and picks up with Peter Parker living in a world that no longer remembers him. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film brings back Holland and Zendaya alongside a cast that includes Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo.

That combination of a hugely popular character, a long gap between solo Spider-Man films and strong audience interest helped turn the release into an event rather than simply another entry in the Marvel calendar.

It also arrives at an important moment for the superhero business.

After a period in which several comic-book releases struggled to match the enormous numbers seen during Marvel’s pre-pandemic peak, Brand New Day demonstrates that audiences are still willing to turn out in extraordinary numbers when a superhero movie becomes a genuine cultural event.

Tom Holland now sits at the centre of Hollywood’s biggest year

The film has also strengthened Tom Holland’s position as one of Hollywood’s most commercially powerful stars.

Alongside the historic success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland appeared in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, another major 2026 box office success.

The scale of Spider-Man’s performance could also translate into an enormous payday for the actor. Reporting cited by The Guardian has suggested Holland could ultimately earn more than $100 million from Brand New Day through his salary and performance-linked compensation.

That figure reflects just how far Holland’s version of Peter Parker has come since he first entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War.

Spider-Man has entered Hollywood’s rarest box office territory

For Sony and Marvel, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become something much bigger than another successful franchise sequel.

It has passed Avengers: Endgame in North America, crossed $2.2 billion worldwide and put itself within striking distance of some of the most commercially successful movies ever released.

The biggest question now is how high it can climb.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens still stands between Spider-Man and the North American box office crown, while films including Titanic remain ahead on the worldwide chart.

But after four weeks of record-breaking ticket sales, one thing is already clear: Spider-Man: Brand New Day is no longer simply one of Marvel’s biggest hits. It has become one of the biggest theatrical releases in Hollywood history.
