Patricia de Lille discussed the illegal land occupation in Grabouw with the Western Cape government.
The Department of Environment, Forestry, and Fisheries (DEFF) said in September that the Knoflokskraal land, near Grabouw, was unusable for forestry.
Knoflokskraal, also known as Farms 336 and 445, has been illegally occupied for more than a year.
The DEFF was given the land by the public works department for commercial forestry.
Zara Nicholson, De Lille’s spokesperson, told News24 that a task team comprised the DEFF, SAPS, Theewaterskloof municipality, Overberg district municipality, and the provincial government.
“All the role players are now committed to finding solutions,” said Anton Bredell’s spokesperson, Wouter Kriel.
Theewaterskloof municipality has been tasked with surveying land occupation, socio-economic and environmental impact, and basic services currently unavailable to Knoflokskraal residents.
The occupation was initially led by people claiming to be Khoi descendants, but other groups have taken over.
The DA’s environment, forestry, and fisheries spokesperson said the land occupation threatened thousands of jobs.
“This is a tragedy for Grabouw and its surroundings,” he said.
