The Obsession box office story has reached a milestone few could have predicted when Curry Barker’s low-budget horror film arrived in cinemas earlier this year. Obsession has now crossed $500 million at the worldwide box office, becoming the first original Hollywood film of the 2020s to reach the mark.
The Focus Features release has climbed to approximately $501.5 million globally, according to TheWrap, overtaking Pixar’s Elemental, which earned $494.6 million worldwide in 2023. That makes Obsession the highest-grossing original film released since the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is an extraordinary result for a movie reportedly produced for just $750,000 and another reminder that audiences can still turn an original idea into a blockbuster without superheroes, sequels or a decades-old franchise attached.
Obsession Box Office Reaches $501.5 Million Worldwide
The latest Obsession box office figures put the film at around $263.4 million in the United States and Canada, with another $238.1 million coming from international markets.
Its overseas performance has continued even after the film completed its theatrical run in the US. Recent releases in markets including China and Germany helped push the movie past the $500 million threshold.
China has contributed approximately $29.7 million, while the United Kingdom has generated about $26.7 million. The total could climb higher still, with a South Korean theatrical release yet to come.
Those figures are particularly striking when compared with how modestly the film began.
Obsession opened domestically with just $17.1 million. Instead of collapsing after its debut weekend, a pattern that has become common for modern theatrical releases, the horror film did the opposite.
Its weekend grosses actually exceeded its opening-weekend total for the following month. The movie did not fall below $17 million during a weekend until its sixth weekend in cinemas, an unusually strong display of staying power driven largely by audience buzz.
A $750,000 Horror Film Became a Global Blockbuster
The scale of the Obsession box office success becomes even more remarkable when its production cost is taken into account.
Writer-director Curry Barker independently made the psychological horror film for a reported $750,000 through Under the Shell, Tea Shop Productions, and Capstone Pictures before Focus Features acquired it following its festival run. TheWrap previously reported that Focus bought the film out of the Toronto International Film Festival for about $15 million.
That tiny production budget, compared with a global gross exceeding half a billion dollars, puts Obsession in rare company.
The film had already set another remarkable benchmark when it passed $400 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing movie on record, before adjusting for inflation, made for a production budget below $1 million.
It has also become the highest-grossing film acquisition from a festival, overtaking a record previously held for more than two decades by Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11.
What Is Obsession About?
Obsession follows Bear, played by Michael Johnston, a hopeless romantic who turns to a mysterious object called the “One Wish Willow” after failing to tell his crush Nikki how he feels.
He wishes for Nikki to fall in love with him. The wish works, but in a way that quickly becomes terrifying.
Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, develops an increasingly dangerous fixation on Bear, turning what initially appears to be a romantic fantasy into a violent supernatural nightmare.
Focus Features describes the movie as a story about a man who gets exactly what he wishes for before discovering that some desires come with a sinister price. The film also stars Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter. Barker wrote and directed the movie.
Navarrette’s performance in particular has attracted attention following the film’s unexpected rise. What started as a relatively small horror release has transformed both her and Johnston into increasingly sought-after Hollywood names.
Why Obsession’s $500 Million Milestone Matters for Hollywood
The significance of the Obsession box office run extends well beyond the financial success of one horror movie.
Hollywood has spent much of the past decade leaning increasingly heavily on franchises, sequels, remakes, comic-book properties, and familiar intellectual property. Large theatrical budgets have made studios more reluctant to gamble on concepts without an existing audience.

But Obsession offers studios evidence that audiences have not lost their appetite for something new. The challenge may be convincing them to show up in the first place.
Horror Continues to Offer Hollywood an Alternative
Horror has long occupied a valuable position in the film business because the genre can generate enormous returns without requiring blockbuster-sized budgets.
Films such as The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity previously demonstrated how inexpensive horror productions could become worldwide cultural phenomena. Obsession has now taken that model to another level in raw box-office terms.
Its success also comes at a time when younger filmmakers and audiences are becoming increasingly influential in horror. Barker built an audience through online filmmaking before making the leap into features, reflecting a changing path into an industry that was once far harder for independent creators to enter.
The filmmaker is already moving on to another horror project, Anything but Ghosts, which he will make with Cooper Tomlinson. Bryce Dallas Howard, Aaron Paul, and Violet McGraw are also attached, with Focus Features set to release the film.
Obsession Proves Original Movies Can Still Become Blockbusters

A $750,000 horror movie opening to $17.1 million would already have represented an impressive success. Turning that beginning into more than $501 million worldwide is something else entirely.
Obsession did not need a superhero, an existing franchise, or a nine-figure production budget to reach blockbuster territory. It needed an idea audiences wanted to talk about and enough theatrical momentum for that conversation to spread around the world.
For Hollywood studios searching for the next reliable franchise, the lesson from one of 2026’s most unlikely hits may be considerably simpler: sometimes audiences just want to see something they haven’t seen before.
