TOPLEY

Reece Topley, England’s bowler, has been ruled out of the Twenty20 World Cup with an ankle injury, just days before the tournament’s opening match against Afghanistan.

During a fielding drill before England’s warm-up win over Pakistan in Brisbane on Monday, the paceman rolled his left ankle.

Topley has recovered from multiple stress fractures in his back in recent years to become an important member of England’s white-ball teams.

In a list dominated by spinners, the 28-year-old is currently ranked as the second-best seamer in T20 internationals.

England also has left-arm options in Sam Curran and David Willey, as well as seam bowlers Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Chris Jordan, and all-rounder Ben Stokes.

On Saturday, Jos Buttler’s 50-over world champions will face Afghanistan in Perth.

Due to injuries, the ICC also approved three additional player replacements.

Sri Lankan bowler Kasun Rajitha has taken the place of the injured Dushmantha Chameera, while all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka will be replaced by batsman Ashen Bandara, who is a travelling reserve.
