Season 2019 officially began on Monday, July 1 for South African taxpayers who use Filing and the SARS MobiApp, according to the SA Revenue Service.
The revenue collection agency also announced enhancements and changes for the upcoming season.
Tax Season 2019 is staggered, which is a significant departure from previous years in order to improve service to taxpayers and encourage conversion to online filing,” it announced.
This enables taxpayers to file their income tax returns using SARS eFiling and the SARS MobiApp for smartphones and tablets from July 1 to December 4, 2019. Taxpayers who want to use online filing for the first time can do so beginning July 1.

Meanwhile, taxpayers who wish to file their income tax returns at a SARS branch may do so from August 1 to October 31. This is much less time than is allowed for users of eFiling and the tax agency’s app.
Enhancements
SARS claims to have introduced several innovations to its digital channels. The SARS MobiApp for smartphones and tablets now includes new services such as registering for eFiling, retrieving usernames and a password reset function, submitting a return and using a camera to upload documents, and calculating taxes. SARS also stated that it has updated eFiling to make navigation much easier.
The tax agency said that taxpayers who are not required to file will receive a simulated calculation from SARS via SMS based on information given to SARS by employers and other sources.
“The outcome will show the taxpayer what they could expect if they had filed their own return.” Taxpayers can accept the calculation’s result or resubmit the return with any changes they want.”
